The right to vote and be voted for is enshrined in Chapter 4 of the 1999 Constitution and in the Electoral Act 2002. The Electoral Act 2002 says a person shall be qualified to register as a voter if he/she:
- Is a citizen of Nigeria
- Has attained the age of 18 years.
- Is ordinarily resident, works in, originates from, or is an indigene of the Local Government Area or Ward covered by the registration centre
- Presents himself/herself to the registration officers of the Commission for registration as a voter within the period stipulated for the exercise – Registration at the closest centre to your residence
- Verifying that your personal data properly captured in the voters list
- Collect your voter’s card (This card must be properly guarded. It is not transferable. It must not be sold or given to another person, as that would mean selling or giving away one’s voting right)
- Identify your polling station
- Being accredited to vote
- Is not subject to any legal incapacity to vote under any laws, rules or regulations in force in Nigeria.
- It is therefore an offence for any citizen to register in more than one registration centre, or to register more than once in any particular centre.
